What is DTG printing?

DTG works much like a specialist digital printer for clothing: water-based inks are printed into the fibres of a prepared garment. Because the design is produced digitally, it can reproduce complex artwork without separating every colour into an individual screen. The result can have a soft feel, especially on suitable cotton fabric.

DTG is particularly useful for illustration, photographic detail, gradients and artwork with many colours. It is also flexible for short runs and on-demand production where traditional screen setup may not be practical.

Best garments and artwork for DTG

DTG generally performs best on good-quality cotton or cotton-rich garments that provide a consistent print surface. Browse our T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts, then ask if you need confirmation that a particular style suits the process.

Supply artwork at the intended proportions, ideally as a high-resolution PNG with transparency or a suitable production file. Very small text, extremely fine lines and low-resolution web images may not reproduce as expected. Avoid screenshots when an original artwork file is available.

DTG compared with DTF and screen printing

Choose DTG for detailed colour artwork on compatible garments and for a soft, direct print. DTF printing is more versatile across fabric types and can be better for some logos, polyester garments and individual elements. Screen printing is often considered for larger identical runs with a limited colour palette. We assess the actual garment, artwork and quantity instead of treating the methods as interchangeable.

Who uses DTG printing?

DTG is popular with clothing brands, artists, creators, event organisers and businesses that want richly detailed T-shirts or hoodies without simplifying the artwork. It can support product tests, short merchandise runs and larger planned orders where colour detail and consistency matter.

Frequently asked questions

What does DTG stand for?

DTG stands for direct to garment. Artwork is printed directly onto a suitable prepared garment using specialist water-based inks.

Is DTG good for photographs and full-colour designs?

Yes. DTG is well suited to detailed artwork, gradients and designs with many colours when the source file and garment are appropriate.

Which fabrics are best for DTG printing?

Cotton and cotton-rich garments usually provide the most suitable print surface. Ask us to check a specific product before planning a larger order.

Is DTG or DTF better?

Neither is universally better. DTG can give a soft, detailed print on suitable cotton, while DTF is versatile across more fabrics and applications. The artwork, garment and quantity determine the better choice.
